Epoxy-Seal
Application Guidelines
General
Information/Surface Preparation
•
New concrete must be cured for 30 days.
• Use only when air & surface temperatures
are 55 – 90 degrees Fahrenheit.
• Surface must be clean, dry, sound and free of
dirt, dust oil, wax andgrease.
• Oil stains should be removed with OSR
(Oil Stain Remover)
or equivalent degreaser.
Method
1 (Preferred)
• Use Seal-Krete
Clean-N-Etch
to
clean and etch the concrete (figure A), triple
rinse (figure B). The surface should have the
feel of 150 grit sandpaper (figure C). When dry,
check the surface with a few drops of water (figure
D). Water should penetrate quickly - if not, re-etch
affected area(s). Allow to dry completely before applying
Epoxy-Seal.

Method 2 (muratic ACID)
•
The surface should be cleaned with a good alkaline cleaner,
such as, TSP (tri-sodium phosphate) and a thorough rinsing.
After etching with muriatic acid, the surface must be
neutralized with baking soda and water followed by another
thorough rinsing. When dry, check the surface with a
few drops of water (figure D) . Water should
penetrate quickly - if not, re-etch affected area(s).
Allow to dry completely before applying Epoxy-Seal.
Note: A one pound box of baking soda added to a five
gallon pail of water will cover an area of approximately
500 sq. ft. Note if using muriatic acid to etch it must
be neutralized with baking soda: Since muratic acid
can only etch the surface then tsp should be used to
clean the floor after etching procedure is complete.
•
Inter-mix all paint.
• Apply one thin coat of Epoxy-Seal
(figure E) with one of the following rollers:
Smooth surfaces (garage floors/basements): 3/16”
to ¼” nap roller
Broom finished surfaces: 3/8” nap roller
Rough or textured surfaces: ½” nap roller
• Allow the first coat to dry, 4 -6 hours (this
time should be extended for cooler temperatures), prior
to applying a second coat in the opposite direction
for full hiding.(figure F)
• Allow the coating to cure as follows before
subjecting to foot or vehicular traffic:

Coverage: 300 – 500 sq. ft. per gallon, depending
on porosity (Approximately: 2 -3 gallons: 2 car garage/3
– 4 gallons 3 car garage)
•
Oil-based paints containing silicone and solvent based
sealers or curing agents in addition to, two component
epoxy or urethane coatings must be chemically or mechanically
removed.
• Latex paints must be sanded, cleaned with an
alkaline cleaner (such as, TSP), rinsed and allowed
to dry completely.
• Inter-mix all paint.
• One thin coat of Seal-Krete
Original Waterproofing Sealer
should be used as a bonding primer or, if unavailable,
16-oz of water may be added per gallon for the first
coat only (do not mix water with all paint, just the
amount you will be using for the first coat alone).

• Coverage: 300 – 500 sq. ft. per gallon,
depending on porosity (Approximately: 2 -3 gallons:
2 car garage/3 – 4 gallons 3 car garage)
•
Do not rinse or clean the surface for at least 30 days
after application.
• Tire marking can be removed with a non-abrasive
scouring pad and mild detergent (scouring pads used
to clean Teflon pans and non-abrasive dishwashing soap
is recommended).
• TSP (tri-sodium phosphate) or a good
alkaline cleaner can be used to clean the garage floor
after the 30 day period. Clean with detergent and shop
broom, rinse with a water hose. Using a pressure washer
is not recommended as it could damage the coating.
• Do not use caustic cleaners (anything containing
abrasive materials or solvents) to clean the Epoxy-Seal.
•
Use only when air & surface temperatures are 55
- 90 degrees F.
• Do not apply if rain is forecast 24 hours.
• Do not apply to wood, metal, glazed surfaces
or where areas of standing water or hydrostatic pressure
are of concern.
• Do not rinse or clean the surface for at least
30 days after application.
• To avoid premature paint failure, do not use
abrasive cleaners (such as, orange cleaner, Formula
409, any substance containing solvents) or a pressure
washer.
• Heavy foot and vehicular traffic requires touch-up.
• Limit of colorant that can be added to deep
base – 8 oz.
• Limit of colorant that can be added to white
base – 5 oz. |
