Surface Preparation

Chalky, chalkingPrevent Chalking

Can you wipe your hand over a surface and the chalk dust covers your hand? Then you may have EXCESSIVE CHALKING.

Excessive formation of fine powder on the surface of a paint film is caused either by failure to adequately prime and seal a porous surface, over thinning of paint or spreading the paint too thinly.

All oil based paints will chalk to some degree as the normal result of exposure to sunlight. On most surfaces, especially white, moderate chalking is helpful because dirt is washed away with the chalk when it rains. In addition, chalking is a normal, desirable way for the paint film to wear away and provide a good surface for future repainting. However, a freely chalking type of paint should not be used above masonry or brick because the chalk wash down will leave an unattractive discoloration on these surfaces.

Seal-Krete Chalk BinderThis problem can be easily cured with a two step process. First, the surface should be scrubbed with a bristle brush and water (garden hose) to remove the existing chalk on the surface. Secondly, one flood coat of Seal-Krete Original Waterproofing Sealer should be applied to bind up the chalk. Once Seal-Krete waterproofing sealer has dried, rub your hand across wall, if hand collects chalk, a second coat of Seal-Krete Original Waterproofing Sealer should be applied. In most cases one flood coat of Seal-Krete will do; however, extremely chalky surfaces will require two flood coats.

In most cases, paint failure can be traced back to inadequate preparation of the surface. When repainting a chalky surface, the paint itself will not bind the chalk, it will however lie on top causing future paint peeling. Seal-Krete Original Waterproofing Sealer will correct this problem by binding up the chalk, giving the new paint a stable surface to adhere to; likewise, lengthening the life of the paint.
